The Detour Diary

Detour (noun): A roundabout way or course; a deviation from a direct course of action

Well, I guess that’s a fair enough way to describe this adventure…

It seems like it wasn’t really that long ago that we made the decision to take the plunge and actually do this crazy thing. It started as a “what if” conversation over wine one evening. “What if” we left our jobs, “what if” we sold our house, “what if” we traveled the world for the next year? Is that actually possible? Do sane, normal, responsible people actually do that? We’ve both worked hard to get where we are in our careers and wondered what would happen if we just walked away for a while. Do you lose momentum? Do you render yourself unemployable once you’re back? Is it worth the risk?

Then we thought about it from the other perspective. What if we have the chance to do something extraordinary like this and we DON’T take it? Would we have the chance again? Would we look back on it in the years to come wishing we had seized the moment when it was in front of us? Would we be missing out on an incredible opportunity to give our son an education on the world?

Well, you already know the conclusion that we came to. Ten months, five continents and what will hopefully be the adventure of a lifetime for us! We booked an around the world ticket headed west. We’ll start with a few days in NY before heading to Australia for our first stop. We’d love to have you follow along as we go. Feel free to chime in and comment if you have ideas of places to go, things to see or people we should meet. The goal of the trip is to immerse ourselves in local cultures, connect with as many people as we can and hopefully do some volunteer work some of the locations as well.

Life is short and the world is wide…let’s embrace the detours and go!
