Hallway Pen Pals

A few days after we arrived in Melbourne, Matt and Jack were coming back from a  morning coffee run when they got off the elevator on the floor of our apartment and bumped into a little girl who looked around Jack’s age. They were caught off guard at the time as there are only two other apartments on our floor and we hadn’t run into anyone yet, much less another kid.

One of the challenges of this trip is ensuring that Jack gets enough time with other kids as we travel to different places. We decided Jack should write a note to the little girl and leave it with the doorman in our building to deliver to her. Jack wrote a note explaining he was visiting from the states and asking if she would like to get together to play some time.

He slid the note under her door and a day later had a response from her. Her name is Daisy and she is also 7 years old. She and Jack had a really cute exchange of notes under doors during the week. Then Daisy and her mum invited us to join them for a picnic at the Melbourne Botanical Gardens this past weekend so the kids could finally meet in person!

The kids hit it off right away (as kids tend to do) and were running all over the gardens exploring. Daisy’s mum was wonderful and gave us all sorts of advice on things to do in Melbourne and on our next stop in Adelaide as well. They’ve invited us over for dinner this Friday, so Jack is looking forward to another chance to play with his new Aussie bud!
