If there is one thing Melburnians (I did spell that correctly…I had to do some research on it to be sure it was accurate) take VERY seriously, it is their coffee. I didn’t realize this before we got here and had a slight moment of panic on our first morning when I realized our apartment did not have a coffee maker. However, crisis averted, we’re surrounded by quite a few great cafes and coffee shops that have amazing coffee (and to Jack’s great pleasure, they also happen to serve chocolate croissants).
After living in Seattle for eight years, I wasn’t sure if any coffee would ever taste as good or be as artfully crafted as it is there. If there’s any place that comes close to surpassing it, I think it’s Melbourne.
Word on the street from people we’ve met here is that everyone takes their coffee so seriously that Starbucks has not done well in the city and a few even closed down. Apparently it wasn’t up to their high standards! You can get great coffee in even the most unexpected places. We had lunch at a Meatball and Wine bar the other day and I had a phenomenal latte at the end of my meal. Because let’s be honest, after a mid-day lunch of meatballs and wine, you either need a latte or a nap and a nap wasn’t in the schedule!
Even the local Fight Club serves coffee. The only thing that could be worse than being at fight club is fighting someone hopped up on a few espressos! I’ll be honest, I was really just looking for an excuse to use my picture of the Fight Club here…
