Great Ocean Road

Okay, I’m back! I have gotten off track since our adventure down the Great Ocean Road and have been away from the blog for a bit. Basically the Great Ocean Road sucked us in and we fell off the face of the earth for awhile…in a good way!

The Great Ocean Road, which I’m going to start calling GOR because it’s much shorter to type, is roughly 150 miles long and connects the Victorian cities of Torquay and Allansford. We had mapped out a plan, which was to spend 2 days driving the GOR to Adelaide, spend 2 days in Adelaide and 1 day driving to Melbourne on a shorter and less scenic route back before flying to Sydney.

I will just say that the plan went out the window QUICKLY and we were basically living up to the name of the blog because we were detouring all over the place! As soon as we got on the GOR, we were just astounded by the amazing landscapes. You know those horrible family road trips you took as a kid (or that you’re taking now with your own kids!) where you have to stop every 30 minutes because someone else has to pee? Basically that was us, only it was stops about every 5 minutes for every single scenic overlook, gorgeous beach or hike that we could take.

The first day, we spent the entire day on a road trip that should have taken about two hours. Not that it was a bad thing. It certainly meant we weren’t spending too much time in the car! We quickly figured out that we would likely never make it to Adelaide and we were okay with that. We decided to just slow down and enjoy it all so we didn’t feel like we had to rush through it. While it would have been great to make it to Adelaide and the Coonawarra wine region, we figured that just gives us an excuse to come back at some point!
